Grand Council, Independent Order of St. Luke, Meets in Suffolk (1897)

The Grand Sitting of the Grand Council Independent Order of Saint Lukes convened Thursday, July 3rd, at the First Baptist Church. Delegates were here from all over the State and some from other States. Prominent among them were W. M. T. Forrester of Richmond, George Dawley and wife of Norfolk, R. Bruce Evans of Richmond and many others too numerous to mention.

The grand officers elected for the ensuing year are as follows: – R. Bruce Evans of Richmond, Past Right Worthy Grand Chief; R. H. Southall of Staunton, Right Worthy Grand Vice Chief; W. M. T. Forrester of Richmond, Right Worthy Grand Secretary; Maggie L. Walker of Richmond, Right Worthy Grand Treasurer; M. B. Hucless of Richmond, Grand Worthy Prelate; Emma L. Owens of Richmond, Grand Worthy Messenger; Elizabeth C. Evans of Richmond, Grand Worthy Inside Sentinel; Gertrude Lawrence of Richmond, Grand Worthy Outside Sentinel.” – The Richmond Planet, 1897

Rev. Marcellus B. Hucless, former pastor of Macedonia A. M. E. Church, Suffolk, and member of the Independent Order of St. Luke. is buried in historic Evergreen Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.
