Unity Cemetery Restoration and Preservation Project Development

Genealogist/Historian Nadia K. Orton and Heritage Researcher Hap Turner join Unity Cemetery Restoration and Preservation Project. Preparation begins for formal presentation of Unity Cemetery Preservation Project proposal before City Council. Project staff meet with Directors of Parks & Recreation, Human Relations, and Marketing and Communication to coordinate community outreach, public service announcements, and cleanup initiatives for Unity Cemetery. Community partners engaged include the Eastern North Carolina Ministerial Alliance and fraternal and civic organizations. Staff meet regularly with Director of IT in development of Unity Cemetery interment database.

Community Outreach

Planned community town hall meeting hosted by staff of Unity Cemetery Restoration and Preservation Project in observance of International Human Rights Day at Booker T. Washington Recreation Center. Postponed due to scheduling conflicts.

January, 2022

MLK Service Day/Unity Cemetery Cleanup

Cemetery maintenance crew cleared for increased maintenance of Unity Cemetery grounds. Project staff meet and engage descendants and family members during cemetery site visits. A volunteer service day/cemetery cleanup planned in recognition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. Cemetery maintenance crew begins grid clearance of cemetery. Service day event postponed due to COVID surge and inclement weather.
